    Workout Update

Got a 40 minute mix in today of running and weight lifting.  If you are reading this and think it's good I got up and got going, give me a 'Hurrah!' in the comments box.

    No workout this morning

Kept hitting the doze alarm this morning instead of getting up and doing what I said I'd do. So I've tremendous guilt this morning for interrupting Van's sleep. Again. This is not the first time...

Patient man, he hasn't said anything but he's every right to do so. Hey, if I want to work out, I should just do it! And if I don't, I shouldn't be trying to get up at 5 am. So why am I not getting on up?

Heh. Better to think about what I can do to convince myself why I like this: I feel good; I am stronger; endurance is way up; fighting is more about technique and less about endurance. What can I do to rebuild the habit? Small rewards. Repurchase protein drinks for quick meals. New music. Get to bed earlier.

OK, that's a start. That first cup of coffee is drunk and I need to get moving.

Not period but very interesting for brewers.

"Start bandying about a word like authentic and you're setting yourself up for trouble. You might think you're as Neolithic as the next guy, but there's always somebody out there even more hard core than you, more willing to reenact the history of ceramics or the quest for fire to prove his point. "

    Workout Done

    I got a 30 minute run/walk in today. Feels good!  I'm sweaty!

Also, got my favor almost done, just need to whipstitch the belt-casing down today. So a bit further in that project. Have found the extra blue fabric for the bliaut that I started and didn't finish as the sides were awkward and will have the seam-ripper out as time permits to start fixing that.

Book-wise, I'm reading Four and Twenty Blackbirds by Cherie Priest and I'm going to ask Becky if she wants to read this one. I think she'll like it.

Hemp & Nettle: two fiber/food plants of the middle ages

Link: Hemp & Nettle: two fiber/food plants of the middle ages.

This has information about hemp being used in period, including  this - "Both hemp and flax were major agricultural crops in Russia in period. Hemp was grown in the south, flax in the north. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, one of the major exports of the Muscovy Company (founded in the second half of the 16th century) was hemp.

According to many textile sources, the archaelogical record of hemp and nettle fabric is confused by the fact that archaelogists, not being able to tell hemp, nettle and flax cloth apart without chemical testing, use the term 'linen' to refer to any fabric of spun and woven vegetable fibers. (Apparently, however, Czech archaelogists call all such fabrics 'hemp', according to Alastair Miller.) Linen is not distinguishable from hemp or nettle cloth in paintings, either. "

Pelicans held on suspicion of being drunk

If you are new to the SCA's world, just know that we recognize those among us who excel in service to the Kingdom by a Pelican award, the highest recognition a person can get for service.

    Photo Album!

Oh, hey, this is just the start of the albums!  There's a lot more to be added as time permits.

    What is 'stretching'?

This is a catagory for times when I am stretching my boundries. Thinking thoughts and doing the personal improvement thing and so thinking out loud. Also the exercising and healthy living efforts will be tagged under 'stretching.'

So today have a little of both. Got news this morning that my father passed away shortly after 5 am. So I'm processing that while spending a lot of time on the phone talking to my brothers and mother and Ginny and leaving a message for Isaiah to call me. Whom I'm still waiting to hear back from.  :-)

Then got on the track and ran the best mile I've ever run. Only did one mile and still need to do the weights but I feel really good about that mile.  Hitting the shower now.

What I Want Out of This Blog

I'm moving to TypePad, paying for the privilege, in order to get a product that offers tagging and will hold my shared online pictures. Blogger, bless them, did not have either. But they are a free site, after all. TypePad is one of the tried and true packages.

So, why the interest in blogging again?  Cause it really is a lot of monologuing, you know? Blah, blah, blah...listen to what I have to say about myself. Comment on my posts. Be impressed.

    Nah.

I am learning to use David Allen's Getting Things Done methodology and one of the basic tasks is to write down everything that has to be done - get it out of my head and into a filing aid.  Actually, if something can be done within two minutes and I can do it now, I do it. If I can't, I file it in the list that I will be referring to when I can do it. Like buying milk. I can't buy milk now as I'm sitting here talking to you. So I put it on my 'store' list and then when I'm at the store or when Van is heading out, I refer to the list and see I need milk.

But if it is something that can't be done in two minutes and it isn't time to work on whatever the task is, I again write it down on the correct list. Like pulling together my kit for fighter practice. It's going to take longer than two minutes but I don't want to forget to do that tomorrow, so it goes on a task list.

Then there are things that are projects, requiring lots of tasks. I'm going to list the projects in here, on one of the lists on the sidebar. Then on my task list that I carry everywhere, I will write down the very next action item, or task, I need to do to move this project forward. As I complete tasks, I'll comment on them in here. And always will remember what the projects are, and with comments from the people in my life, both electronic and live, will keep it all straight! Neat, heh?
