    Fighter practice - rapier style

I didn't kit out tonight as everyone else was doing light. So I sewed and watched after Towtan, Fulke's part german shepherd puppy. And watched the tables when the youngsters from the family partying in the pavillion came over to watch. There were four of them out there practicing for Day of Fencing. Looked like fun; they were pushing themselves though, knowing we have about 5-6 hours of fighting in a few weeks. And we sat around and talked, stories were told, puppy was entertained. I had fun. But no workout for me...so I guess I need to think about going to the Cities tomorrow. Humm..

    Happy Thursday!

So I have yet another book on my desk this morning, this one titled "Ireland before the Vikings" and it is a browned, old paperback that talks about hte ruling classes in early Ireland. Want to read it. Instead I'm going to go on the desk in about 5 minutes and work all day. I do have good, interesting projects right now so that helps.

Ha. Not much to say yet. Except that the energy of Northshield seems to be migrating east for the next two weeks. So many of the people, the fighters anyway, that I talk to are talking about and preparing for those two weeks. I am actually jealous that I too am not going. I thought this would not ever happen but yeah, I want to be also going, to fight on those fields. Just to measure myself against the experience, mostly, weigh up how I do against how I think I should do.

Two fighter practices and a car...

I wanted to be scared again... I wanted to feel unsure again. That's the only way I learn, the only way I feel challenged. -- Connie Chung

So I need to talk about Silfren Mere practice and about Nordskogen practice  - I'm slowly overcoming the urge to panic when I have control of one of these things, the polearm or the spear. I can learn this and who knows how good I will become with it? Let's go find out... Lots of patience on Monday night and some good hearted laughing last night was very helpful. I'll get the details into a new blog I'm setting up for the fighting side of things. The fighting journal I've kept paged here will stay up, just not going to be updated. The new blog will live here. And of course the original page is here.

The car is a delight. It handles like a dream and has space for all the gadgets and wires I need. The xm radio is kinda seductive...but I can also pop in my mp3 player and not need to pay for radio services. I don't know about packing all my junk into it yet for an event, and the roof rack is not yet available.

Just a quick update while a report was running. Laters!

    Headache...and spear college

drinking my morning coffee, cursing the vodka bottle. Had a drink at sorta like 9 last night, a short one, and that should not have done this. Maybe it's the pressure systems going through.

So recap of Sunday which I didn't get in here last night. I did some house stuff yesterday morning, including finiishing a new fighting tunic that is all linen and pretty. I need to decide if I am going to recycle my existing shoulders or if I'm going to buy new; I've a shiny breastplate I've not ever used cause it is not period for me, but I think this new tunic will cover it and I'm becoming OK wiht that. It sorta looks like this. I went to the storage unit and found this piece plus the two helms I have extra; may be able to loan one out. Well, one belongs to Luce and I'm just been storing it.

    Fighting at Sir Tom's place

Ginny did decide to go on a float trip with her friends yesterday. So I plotted out some wireless points between here and Cedar, MN and threw all my gear into Luce’s truck and Luce, Little John and I took off. Got there pretty close to 11 am. Tom’s property is a nice chunk of land, including an area that will be an excellent woods battle site. There were some dead trees back there and we warmed up by hauling fallen wood out of there. Tom gave Sir Tarrach his chainsaw to run, Brrrr-brrr. We hauled logs and branches up towards the house so they’d be ready to burn.

So, geared up, forgot my kneepads and borrowed knee pads. No idea what happened to to them and that bothers me. Are they floating in the laundry? Littering the park? Warm ups were good but I’m having trouble with adrenaline build-up, finally feel the breath loosening up and the want to tackle yet another fight coming in. It was hot out there, with the metal helmet on and the layers of protective gear.

Yeah for Peg, who held onto my phone while I was fighting! Never did get a call from work but a couple from shire people.

I fought Zadok, Peter, Beth, Tarrach and someone else. Five warmups. Some of them being a couple of rounds and then a break to cool down. One ending short because I had the tremblies for some reason. I just pushed through though - this was no time to be wussing out and it did go away.

Melee work. Luce and I were teamed up; I need to learn better how to keep her in mind, how to work with her. I suggested to John we do some team-building exercises back home here. We would run a couple of melee battles, then pop tops and find shade. There would be training in the shade and one time, freezy-pops. I remember one battle where I was the thin point in the shield wall and getting shield rushed and flying backwards from the impact, landing on my butt and then my helm whacking the ground. Got up and killed someone after that. I remember another where the charge had my group of four going to the right BUT I was flank-man and there coming up to flank my own group was this group of three - I addressed them rather than staying with my own group and I’m not sure if that was right to do or not. That group of three, two after Luce died, stayed alive for a while through the battle. I am hoping I kept the three busy for a bit, maybe 10-15 seconds before they got me to drop the shield enough for a polearm blow to the top. I’d made eye contact and was not going to turn my back on them at that point.

So I got to a point I couldn’t do anymore. I was not the first out of armor, though! I was in the shade, watching the last couple melees and Tristan started organizing a spear class. I paired up with Roisin and using polearms - same idea, long poles just not as long. I had a sticky end to mine, though, and wore a dime-sized blister up and then off as the skin just peeled back. Ick. Ouch. Luce found me a bandaid.

Then meat and chips and watermelon and talking. While Roisin and Beth continued to fight. They kept going for about another hour, maybe.

We must have left about 7...I got home at 9:30. This morning I’m a bit sore and my neck is stiff from that fly-backwards bit. I’ve a page of notes I wrote down on the way home.

Today, Gin and I are shopping and I have some work to do for WW plus laundry. Eventually. Soon. Yesterday was a lot of fun, and I hope we do it again.

    Lillie's fighting

I got one more Lillies post, to talk about Bruce's visit, but it's not fading the way the fighting is in my head. Stay tuned!

I first went down to the battlefield on Monday; I really do not remember the scenarios on Monday. I remember sticking to it as long as the battles went on. It seems that Lillie's battles have two aspects. An initial battle that is shorter but intensive in plot, and then an equally intense rezz battle to finish the day. So that Monday was fun but also a blur. In fact, most of it is all a blur now; I should have written this up days ago, I guess. So let's see what I can do without talking about days.

    Tournament of Chivalry tomorrow

I got home and fell into a v deep nap from about 7-8. But I'm heading to bed cause tomorrow is going to be a v long day. But tonight I got two thrusting tips back on swords, got my polearm retipped, and got my gauntlet gloves retied on. Plus got a length of rattan cut for Tom, so I have a training buddy.

Neck still hurts and it's been a week. Not sure what it is going to take to heal it up. If it's still bothering me, I really will go into urgent care on Sunday, like I almost did last Sunday. LOL. And who would have been there to take my tents down at that point? Luce and An were as tired as I was.

    I got to fight...

I scooped this off my live journal page, duplicating in both places. Still need to talk about Ages, still need to do a proper fight-evaluation thingie. But this was last night.

The drive with Luce, John and Jacques was quick and properly talkative. We got up there, though, to find the bathrooms were closed. No potties meant an uncomfortable Sorcha, who would have bared her sports bra in the car but yeah. Wasn't going to try to fight with a full bladder. About to whine to Luce to go to the nearest gas station, we were saved by a very nice couple across the street, whose nephew was kitting out for the first time. Yeah! Potty and a private place to change clothes!

So I warmed up with someone I cannot remember who, and then played with Emmie for a while. She's in training mode. I fought someone else but we were all waiting for melee at this point. Sir Tom wanted to work us through some things. And we did. The adrenaline did not kick in until about the third pass of a two on one melee drill. We also did a lot of work on guarding the ford against each other. That was awesome fun, esp as the folks teaching told us what they wanted to see, then after the battle told us how we had done in good detail. Mostly the spears and longer polearms were to be blocked down or swept to one side and held there by one of a team, so the other could kill. We worked on sheilds moving from defending the spears to doing pulse charges and advances. Staying and protecting your wing man at the right time, charging the right times.

I smell that my rib is ready to eat, then a quick shower and bed. I'm gtired, I'm happy. Always good in Nordskogen. I still need to talk about Ages, but later....

Quick update to finish the day

I went to fighter practice and only four of us showed up; Dave, Bob, Tom and myself. So we kitted up and fought. omg I find it hard to breathe until the adrenaline kicks in. I can feel my heart trying to jump out...so I'm sitting here now and my shoulders hurt and my back hurts but a good rum and coke is helping me relax.

I went out for sandwiches with the guys and then hit Hancocks at 4:45, got six yards of fabric for shirts and a chemise by 6 pm. Then went to Luce's to watch a couple of horrid cartoons waiting for John, and some drill work with Luce. I think I wanna learn bastard sword. That was really fun, plus I could feel the pull in my back muscles which can only help my single sword/shield work.

I'll go into details on the fighter journal; no sense boring everyone here. But I got good fighting in. Nice way to end the weekend.
